Corporate Forum on Paper and the Environment
The Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) established the Corporate Forum on Paper and the Environment (CFPE) in 2004 to enhance communication and seek solutions to environmental issues affecting both buyers and suppliers of pulp and paper products. Metafore convenes and facilitates the CFPE, and continues to provide information about market factors affecting the cycle of fiber.
Participants in the CFPE include a cross-section of some of the largest buyers of pulp and paper in North America, as well as their FPAC member suppliers, including:
Cariboo Pulp & Paper Company
The Paper Fiber Life Cycle
The Paper Fiber Life Cycle Project was conceived by the

Without the contribution of fresh fiber into the paper-making process, North American consumers would run out of paper in less than a year.
This is one of several interesting findings in Metafore's Fiber Cycle Project--a collaborative effort describing the different stages of wood fiber as paper is made, used, recovered and disposed.

The following documents provide further information on developing practices that promote responsible forestry, paper recovery and efficient paper use (all are PDFs):
- A definition of the paper fiber life cycle that illustrates and details sourcing, transforming, using and disposing of paper.
- A communications slide deck that provides an overview of the paper fiber life cycle and summarizes Metafore's findings.
- A frequently asked questions document that describes how the paper fiber life cycle operates in Canada and the U.S.
- The complete analysis report on the paper fiber life cycle that details the methodology and data sources Metafore used to inform the project work.
Overall, Metafore found that more action is needed to recover paper from Canada and the U.S. With approximately 37 million tons of paper sent to landfills each year, Metafore investigated--and continues to examine--what practices businesses and their operating units can do to enhance recovery.
To meet the need for businesses to take action, Metafore prepared a self assessment guide [PDF] outlining steps companies can take and the issues they'll face in quantifying how much paper they use and recover.
