Green Building Programs
Green building is becoming a global building practice gaining momentum at a rapid pace, thanks in large part to architects and builders seeking ways to construct projects that conserve raw materials and energy, as well as lessen environmental impacts. For more information on green building around the world, visit the World Green Building Council at www.worldgbc.org.
Among several green building programs in North America, the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program is the most widely recognized.
LEED is a voluntary, consensus-based national standard for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings. Many state and local governments, federal government agencies, and educational institutions have either adopted LEED as a green building standard or created similar programs designed to address local economic and environmental considerations.
